Work, Life and Assulting Shoplifters
It is VERY cold in the service department this morning.
Wait (you say) isnt it Saturday Andrew?
Yup it sure is and at the time of writing this, I have been here for almost two hours. Things have begun to pile up and while the new hireling is working out ok, he is still new and is still learning (absolutely nothing wrong with that). So, to make sure that Monday doesnt suck complete ass, I thought I would come into work and get ahead a little bit. It looks like it was a good choice. I have already made a lot of progress and it looks like that when I leave, I will have gotten a good amount of work done.
Outside of work has been ok, but not the best. Last weekend I kind of began to feel a little under the weather. By Monday morning "a little under the weather" had turned into a stuffed nose and a REALLY messy throat. I had a hard time breathing and swallowing and it I did not want to go to work. Unfortunately, the idiot was due to be fired any day at that point and the machines were piling up to be worked on. So I had to come in. As of today, the cold has slightly receeded and the sniffles are only bad when I am cold (like right now). So, because of the cold, I have been spending my evenings in bed resting in front of the tv and doing as little as possible. I hope that this cold thing passes sooner then later as it would be nice to spend more time in the evening with Shauna rather than alone in the bedroom with the tv (although Smallville, E-ring and Commander in Chief were all very good this week).
So. Now on to the most exciting thing for this week. On Friday myself, several managers, multiple employees and a customer chased down and captured a shoplifter who tried to steal a laptop from the store where I work. Towards the end of the day (3ish) a call went over the PA system using our store code for shoplifters in the retail area. I went up to the front as quickly as I could with the new service kid in tow. We went up front and it seemed like at that point more then half of the building had heard the page and had come up to the front. I wandered around for a little bit with the new employee, telling him what the page ment and what we should be doing. Almost right away I spoted the two guys who were the reason for the shoplifting page. They were OBVIOUSLY there to steal something and it was almost stupidly painful to watch them. They wandered about looking at things, waiting for one of about twenty staff to look away before they touched something. Almost all the staff in the building asked them if they needed help at least once.
After about ten minutes, one of the two guys went to the laptop isle and didnt move from a single spot, all the while looking around him and fiddle with something in his coat pocket (later we found a set of wire cutters on him). I asked him twice if he needed help (said no both times) and then, while I was looking right at him, dislodged a metal security rod holding down a laptop. When he saw me looking, he attempted to look like nothing was wrong. At this point two other people began to watch him directly and one manager walked up to him, made eye contact and asked him if he needed help. He said no. He turned away from the manager, and in one motion, he tucked the laptop into his coat and began to make his way to the door. Once he got to the door and it was very obvious that theft was in the works, we tried to stop him. It was at this point the thieves friend got in on it. Guy #2 tried to strong arm our staff back into the store while his buddy got out. At that point a customer got involved and things got exciting. Guy #2 ran away to a car and made his escape. Guy#1 with the laptop, dropped the laptop and attempted to run away. Big mistake.
15 people ran after the thief and caught him across our parking lot. The guy got thrown to the ground by a customer and one of our employees and as soon as he was down, three other people jumped on him to keep him down. The cops were called right away and almost from the beginning, the guy was screaming that he didnt do anything and that he wanted to sit up and that this was wrong and a bunch of other innapropriate words. Before the cops arrived, the guy made a mess of himself trying to struggle and get away screaming all the while. When the cops finally showed up, the guy shut up pretty fast and that was the end of that. The cops took statements from myself, a manager and the customer and names of a couple other people there. If he pleads not guilty I will have to go down to the courthouse and testify. I highly doubt this guy will plead not guilty.
All and all it was very exciting and a great way to end the day and the week.
