Work, Life and Assulting Shoplifters

It is VERY cold in the service department this morning.

Wait (you say) isnt it Saturday Andrew?

Yup it sure is and at the time of writing this, I have been here for almost two hours. Things have begun to pile up and while the new hireling is working out ok, he is still new and is still learning (absolutely nothing wrong with that). So, to make sure that Monday doesnt suck complete ass, I thought I would come into work and get ahead a little bit. It looks like it was a good choice. I have already made a lot of progress and it looks like that when I leave, I will have gotten a good amount of work done.

Outside of work has been ok, but not the best. Last weekend I kind of began to feel a little under the weather. By Monday morning "a little under the weather" had turned into a stuffed nose and a REALLY messy throat. I had a hard time breathing and swallowing and it I did not want to go to work. Unfortunately, the idiot was due to be fired any day at that point and the machines were piling up to be worked on. So I had to come in. As of today, the cold has slightly receeded and the sniffles are only bad when I am cold (like right now). So, because of the cold, I have been spending my evenings in bed resting in front of the tv and doing as little as possible. I hope that this cold thing passes sooner then later as it would be nice to spend more time in the evening with Shauna rather than alone in the bedroom with the tv (although Smallville, E-ring and Commander in Chief were all very good this week).

So. Now on to the most exciting thing for this week. On Friday myself, several managers, multiple employees and a customer chased down and captured a shoplifter who tried to steal a laptop from the store where I work. Towards the end of the day (3ish) a call went over the PA system using our store code for shoplifters in the retail area. I went up to the front as quickly as I could with the new service kid in tow. We went up front and it seemed like at that point more then half of the building had heard the page and had come up to the front. I wandered around for a little bit with the new employee, telling him what the page ment and what we should be doing. Almost right away I spoted the two guys who were the reason for the shoplifting page. They were OBVIOUSLY there to steal something and it was almost stupidly painful to watch them. They wandered about looking at things, waiting for one of about twenty staff to look away before they touched something. Almost all the staff in the building asked them if they needed help at least once.

After about ten minutes, one of the two guys went to the laptop isle and didnt move from a single spot, all the while looking around him and fiddle with something in his coat pocket (later we found a set of wire cutters on him). I asked him twice if he needed help (said no both times) and then, while I was looking right at him, dislodged a metal security rod holding down a laptop. When he saw me looking, he attempted to look like nothing was wrong. At this point two other people began to watch him directly and one manager walked up to him, made eye contact and asked him if he needed help. He said no. He turned away from the manager, and in one motion, he tucked the laptop into his coat and began to make his way to the door. Once he got to the door and it was very obvious that theft was in the works, we tried to stop him. It was at this point the thieves friend got in on it. Guy #2 tried to strong arm our staff back into the store while his buddy got out. At that point a customer got involved and things got exciting. Guy #2 ran away to a car and made his escape. Guy#1 with the laptop, dropped the laptop and attempted to run away. Big mistake.

15 people ran after the thief and caught him across our parking lot. The guy got thrown to the ground by a customer and one of our employees and as soon as he was down, three other people jumped on him to keep him down. The cops were called right away and almost from the beginning, the guy was screaming that he didnt do anything and that he wanted to sit up and that this was wrong and a bunch of other innapropriate words. Before the cops arrived, the guy made a mess of himself trying to struggle and get away screaming all the while. When the cops finally showed up, the guy shut up pretty fast and that was the end of that. The cops took statements from myself, a manager and the customer and names of a couple other people there. If he pleads not guilty I will have to go down to the courthouse and testify. I highly doubt this guy will plead not guilty.

All and all it was very exciting and a great way to end the day and the week.

Thursday (might as well keep the trend going)

Very cold in the service department this morning. Very cold. This summer the heating unit for the part of the building that I am in got busted (although we didnt know it until recently) and my company is in the process of trying to figure out what might be the solution to the problem. It is appearing likely that we will be moving in 9 months or so and it will be very expensive to have the heating unit replaced. What might happen (and i'm willing to bet it will) is that my company will not get the unit fixed and just tough out the winter without it. Which is fine for some folks in the building, they will have heat. Where I work will be an ice box. My direct boss has said that if his bosses choose not to get the heating unit fixed, he will move my department to another part of the building where its warm.

As of this morning, the cold seems to be getting better, not by much, but getting better. I have been sleeping ok, but its getting through the days that have been tough. Its mostly a thick cough with some minor sniffles.

Shauna has been studying like mad the past few days and will continue for the next week or so for her first biology exam. Its very obvious that she is nervous about it and that she wants to do well (which she will for sure). Since this cold has come on, shes been hanging out on the couch in the evenings before bed with her notes and my laptop and i've been sleeping/dozing/watching tv in the bedroom trying to take it easy.

The idiot got let go yesterday at the end of the day. It happened pretty quick and was a pretty quiet event. My boss took him into the boardroom and talked to him for about 5 minutes with a secondary witness. After the meeting my boss led the idiot back to his desk where personal items were collected and then he was shown out the door. We had all wondered if there might be more drama, but it was a pretty quiet affair. Partly due to the cold meds I had been taking all day and the caffine i had had, I feld bad for him. Don't get me wrong, he had to go, but he didnt see it coming and it couldnt have been easy to take. It had to happen though.

The next long while is going to be super hard.

Until next time.

Wednesday (Seeing a Trend?)

Very sick.

At work.

Homicidal.

Sigh.

Tuesday

Got a cold coming on.

Woke up this morning and had that tell-tale goop in the back of my nose and throat and I knew that it wasnt good. I've been down this road every year for as long as I can remember and so it shouldnt surprise me that this has come along now. The weather is changing and getting colder and it is raining now, but I suspect if it doesnt warm up we might see some snow today as well.

I think I slept ok last night, Shauna and I went to bed at 10ish, I dozed off while we watched a show on much music and at 11 we turned out the lights and i passed out.

The service area is cold this morning, big surprise and it doesnt bode well for the winter. I know that the high mucky mucks are talking about moving us and so I am doubtful that a new heating unit will be going in. If I have to put on mittens to work in the coming months, I will not be a happy camper.

Hopefully the idiot will go away tomorrow.

Hopefully.

Friday

Whats on the plate for the weekend:

Tonight: Head over to a friends place for a BBQ and a visit. Shauna and I have been hermits lately and these friends deserve some face time from us.

Saturday: Email has gone off to a friend for a bit of patio time. It's supposed to be sunny and warm on Saturday, so more then likely it will be nice to meet and hang out for a bit. That may happen AFTER I head into work. This place is a disaster area and I think if I want to make it through the next week sane, I should come in for a bit. I think perhaps I will come in really early and then ask Shauna to meet me down here later.

Sunday: Clean the apartment. I've been lazy for the last few weeks and the apartment is showing it. With the chance of warm sunny weather all weekend, it would be cool to get the windows open and some sunshine in. Sunday night will probably find me watching the Simpsons and Family Guy.

Desperately trying to get myself motivated to excercise again. I start and stop so often that starting up again has gotten harder. I believe I will quit again because I did so in the past. I can see when I look at myself in the mirror that I am not treating my body as I should and I am sure that something will come on later to prove it right, but for the moment all the plumbing works and I am just unhappy with how it looks. Shauna says she loves me and how I look, but I dont love how I look. I wish I could take my own advice, when she asks me if she is pretty (which she is, beyond a doubt) I say yes, she says she doesnt think so and I ask her if she thinks I am a liar. She says no and I say then believe me! How I wish I could do the same for myself. Or perhaps she doesnt believe me, like I dont believe her when she says im fine the way I am.

Thank god its Friday. Work has not been pleasent this week and it may get worse before it gets better. The idiot is very possibly on his way out the door without any sort of warning. Boot to the ass and say your goodbyes. So far the day hasn't been progressing very well. I cant seem to fix a couple of supposedly easy problems and its really pissing me off. Thank god lunch is in 30 minutes or I would have to fucking kill someone.

Damn I hate that idiot.

Ok, For Real This Time

Ok. Today I am going to get a real update done.

The last two months have been a lot of work, a lot of studying and a lot of stress.

At the end of June a long term employee of the company I work for, left for another, better paying job. The grass is greener kind of thing. Things were ok for a short while but not for very long. The employee who left was replaced from inside by a idiot of the highest caliber. At the beginning of July a huge rush of computers came in and it seemed like there wouldnt be an end to the computers that needed looking at. Things were ok for me then because I knew that I would be heading off to the Fringe and that whatever happened while I was on vacation wasnt my concern. But I was so wrong.

The Fringe came and went in a haze of booze and food and before I could say a thing, I was back in the shop fixing computers. Some of which had been there BEFORE I went on holidays almost three weeks earlier.

August began to roll on and things went from bad to worse with alarming speed. Computers that needed to be worked on were being set aside for all sorts of stupid reasons and customers were getting bloodthirsty. During all this time the idiot was proving his worth by either messing up every machine he returned to a customer or spending so much time out on service calls that it was almost pointless to have him around. As August was coming to a close, I began to study for my Windows XP Professional certification in ernest and it paid off in September with a resounding successful pass. Unfortunately that was the only good thing about September. The stress levels at work were off the chart and almost brought people to blows, or perhaps just recieving them.

Now that October is moving along, the idiot is still here but his days are vastly numbered. Unfortunately we cant seem to get rid of him just yet. That fact is driving me mad. I cant listen to him talk anymore without wanting to punch the idiot in the face. Hopefully he will be let go soon.

The next few months will see me getting a couple more certifications and eventually become an onsite technician. It looks like my boss would like to see me out fixing machines and networks at customers locations.

More later, the idiot has struck again.

Writers Block

Sorry for not writing much.

I am very busy, but I can not seem to get anything out and written down here.

Things are ok, but busy.

When I can sit down and force myself to write something, I will.

Work, Snow and Other Things

So.

It snowed yesterday. It rained yesterday. It was windy and very cold yesterday. I hated it. But it wasnt a terrible day, in fact it was an ok day.

I was working out of the service department for the whole day helping the network technician deploy a new network. Now, the question that needs to be asked is; "Why were you out there?", well. The person who should have been out there helping is a moron and to ensure that the customer didnt see it, I was asked to replace him. So, I went out there and helped out and things went very well.

Things are much better after the screaming rant I did the other day. I wont really go into it here, but after I put that in, my day got a lot better and things went smoothly after that. To the people who commented in the last couple days, thanks, its good to know your out there.

October 4, 2005

Finally..

It's finally happened. I had hoped that it wouldnt come for a few weeks yet, but it did.

They have forcasted snow for the first time this fall.

It may possibly snow tomorrow.

Sigh.
