Grey Monday

Rain and grey clouds fill the sky this morning, which is good. I hate going to work on a Monday with it being 20 degrees with lots of sun shine. Nothing makes it harder to go to work when you know how nice it is outside. And knowing its nice outside for me is even worse, since I cant see outside from where I work.

This weekend was very quiet. Shauna was out doing Havok! stuff all day Saturday so I spent half the day doing nothing and the other half sleeping. I think I got like 20 hours of sleep. I guess sometimes I just need to recharge my batteries. Sunday was spent playing computer games for the most part. I got playing Age of Empires II and then tried to install Age of Mythology. That didnt go so well and I had to wipe everying off the computer and get it reinstalled. Dang!.

Not too sure how today should go. Usually I know in the morning how the day is going to go, either bad or good and this morning I cant really seem to tell, maybe the weather is throwing me off. I suppose my dad would say that if I want it to be a good day then it will be and if I think it will be a bad then it probably will be.

Time to go get ready for work.

New Look

Well, here it is. Another new look. This is the blog layout I have over at the other Random Fusion and I liked it so much that I have appropriated it for this site as well. All the linkage is not done as of 10am on Saturday but that will change. I will add a link to a colophon to tell all about the site, who the author was of the css and where the images are hosted.

Family

Uh oh, five days since the last post. Far too long. But nothing really has been happening and I am sure all of you dont want to read more boring details of my life as a stock boy.

Tonight I got to meet some more of Shauna's family (before tonight it had been a few immediate family members here in the city). Some relatives from Alberta were in town visiting and invited us over for some chit chat and some drinks. I must admit that I am greatly relieved at how much I like Shauna's family. I like everyone I have met so far and it seems to me that they like me too. Tonight I met Uncle Gary and Aunt Thora, Aunt Diane, Cousin Colleen and her husban Mike. The only person I didnt meet was Diane's husband Jim.

They were all very friendly and made me feel very welcome for which I am very greatful. I certainly look forward to heading out west to meet more of that part of the family.

Uncle Gary, feel free to email us any time. :)

Thanks again.

... what you want

An old Rolling Stones song has been going through my head lately.

"You don't always get what you want. You dont always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, you might get what you need."

Well, I am trying, trying hard and I dont think I am getting what I need and I certainly am not getting what I want. What do I want? I want to be able to pay all my bills. I want to be able to have a fridge full of food, ok no, I want to be able to have a fride with SOME food in it. I want to be able to afford to do laundry more then once a month. I want to be able to afford to eat properly.

To say that the last half year or so has been hard, is an understatement. I know that there are people out there (some of whom read this page perhaps) who have had it harder then me, but this is the hardest I have ever had it and while I know it could get worse, I dont know how I could handle that.

God I need for this to get better soon.

To or Not To..

Switch. I am looking at changing my blogging software. I like the depth that MT has but I dont use all the tools. I dont really need to use all the tools. So it really is just a bit much. I think that perhaps I could use Blogger and be happy, but its on the low end of what I think I might need.

At this point I am trying or using Live Journal, Movable Type, Blogger and Radio. I like Blogger and MT the most with Live Journal following up last. The free version is VERY simple and seems to be very limited. Radio has serious potential. I like the layout, of both the basic templates and the posting system. I like that the software is on my home computer and not on some server I will never see (not that this is a problem now, I just like it more that its on my computer).

The most simple solution is just to go back to the old Random Fusion on Blogspot. I love the new templates that they have included and the new look of their site is a huge improvement. The only downside to it is that it doesnt REALLY allow me the room to grow my css and html skills that I would like. Movable Type has way more room for me to grow and expand. So, what to do.

At the moment I dont have the cash to go into the new Movable Type. So, I will keep using the version I have. I dont have the cash to pay for Radio Userland so that is out of the question. I think the middle ground on this is to keep using MT, post occasionally on Blogger and hope that some money comes in for me to pay for all of what I want.

Tech Support

Doing a little bit of tech support today. Nothing too complicated, just a little time consuming.

Right at this very moment I am watching Windows try and defrag itself (it has been checking the drive for errors for the last 30 minutes). Before that was a little spyware removal and after the very fun defrag, we will attempt to do a serious deep down virus check.

The computer in question is my dad's computer at his office. Its a few years old and is beginning to show some wear and tear, despite the fact it still does what it should for him, without chugging along too much. Most small offices these days dont really need the newest souped up machines. Most computers these days are doing fine in the low Pentium range.

The new hardware in computers is driven by games and media. Most offices dont need the kind of hardware that is out there now. Office software runs easy enough on mid range stuff and will be satisfied by 10 gigs of space. The problem that is met by most offices is that new developments to protect and save our data is met using newer operating systems and programs that dont run fully on older equipment and software.

Perhaps more care should be taken to make things work with what is out there rather then force people to buy newer stuff.

Power

Something occurred yesterday at work that I was going to write about but I didnt get the chance. So I thought I would put my thoughts down on it now.

Yesterday, towards the middle of the day, my head boss, took all the men in our area aside and had a meeting. At this meeting his feelings about sexual harrassment were given to us and we were told the policy regarding this that he has. Basically that he wont tolerate it and it isnt something that will occurr again. Sexual harrassment can be unwanted advances of a sexual nature, touching or contact in an unwanted manner in our case, comments or language that is unprofessional and immature in nature. I believe however, that the meeting we had was unwarrented and not needed.

All people regardless of sexual orientation or nature (ie male or female) have the basic human right to work without being made uncomfortable by other workers. Jokes and stories and language can make someone feel harrassed. This is something that I wont deny, there is a time and place for everything and sometimes your place of employment ISNT the place for that joke about the priest and the hooker. Not everyone likes or wants to hear about your adventures the night before and not everyone wants to know how long your tool is.

However, when the issue of sexual harrassment is brought to bear against someone or someones for the sole reason of placing one person over another, then serious issues arrise. This is what I BELIEVE has occurred. I believe that one person was not offened by what was said and done but rather used an opportunity to get someone in trouble. When a person comes and says that they feel they have been made to be uncomfortable and sexually harrassed in the work place, the complaint can not be taken lightly. People can be fired for simply not putting stop to something like this. Our boss, whether he believed it or not, HAD to act. If he hadnt then things would have gotten bad for him. The person who the complaint was issued against, has in the past made jokes of an off coloured nature but for at least 4 years, had no complaints against him.

I believe that there is something malicious going on. I believe that someone is using the issue of sexual harrassment to get back at one or two other employees who are not liked by the first employee. I beleive that the men who had complaints made against them, were used as stepping stones by an employee who wants a promotion to the office. An this bothers me more then anything.

At my place of work now, there is an air of SERIOUS distrust. Of serious anger and there is a lot of shoulder looking. You never know who is going to be behind you when you talk to someone else, so you watch for it. You dont know who you can talk to anymore and its very strange. I personally think that something will come of this in the months to come and it wont be good.

Look For Changes

MT finally got around to releasing their new software. Moveable Type 3 was released today and well, the fee based system they have set up has got me thinking VERY VERY seriously about jumping ship.

When I started blogging, I didnt really want to pay for anything and that was what brought me to this software. I found someone who would host this for me for free and then I could use it for free. But now thats changing.

If I am going to have to pay then I want to pay something less then $699. I am sorry, I dont think that this is worth that much (note: that large amount is for the fullest features and most support, an unsupported, trimmed featureless option is avaialable for free)

Radio Userland is my first other option I am looking at now.

More later tonight.

Old Look

You will have to forgive me. The last look was nice and for no reason other then I am dork, I changed it to this.

The new Blogger came out this week and I really like some of the new templates. I want to make one of them mine. But! I dunno how just yet. So I put this look in place and left it at that.

More Later.

Mandrake

After testing out Red Hat and playing around for a few days, I decided to install Mandrake 9.1 on the computer and get to know it again. Well its been easy so far, although the install did seem to hang for a while for no apparent reason that I could see.

Dont have much time this morning so this will be a short post. More later tonight.

Hair Pulling Time Redux

Well, here it is the aftermath and I have to say, I have as much hair as when I started. Yup, the installation went off far easier then I had hoped.

All of the third iso was downloaded when I got home from work yesterday and was ready to go. They all burned onto CDs easy enough and the only problem I have with them is that I dont have a damn CD pen to mark them with.

The install began with only two minor problems. The first occurred when I was trying to install to a empty disk on a extra ide controller and the install had a crash. The second time around I chose a couple different options and it went off without a hitch. I like the current Red Hat look and feel for the install process, very nice and smooth and I think I prefer it over the Mandrake stuff I have seen so far (Mandrake 10 is out there, and I have yet to see it). The total installation time took all of about two hours maybe. There were no driver errors or hitches and it was working right away.

This is the first time I have used Red Hat and I have to say I like it. The large icon look that is standard is different from Windows and done well without being stupid looking. I had thought that you could use the KDE desktop with Red Hat but the default is Gnome and I have yet to find a way to change it.

The longest part of the whole process was the installation of new packages. This took more then two hours and I had to leave it going when I went to bed. The installation of the new packages went off without a hitch and I was pleased to see that it didnt require me to reboot when it was done.

What comes next is learning how to install other applications, run stuff from the command line and generally work with Linux. As time goes by, I will post here and in Two Fishes about the experience.

Hair Pulling Time

Well, for some insane reason, I have forgotten the trouble I went through with my last attempt at Linux. I am going to try and install it again. The new Mandrake 10 will go onto the laptop and Red Hat 9.something will go onto the big computer along with XP.

I am still downloading Red Hat and I gave up trying to find the iso disk images for Mandrake. All the american ftps all have the binaries. I dont really want to download my disk images from thailand.

Anyway. I am really tired. Talk to you tomorrow morning.

Good Movie

Just went and watched the trailer for Garden State and it looks fantastic. Follow the link and see for yourself.

Sunday Morning

Sun is shining out there, but it is being deceptive. It is May now and the weather is still early spring cold rather then mid spring warm. It should be a few degrees warmer at least and it isn't. So it looks nice out there but it really isnt.

I dont really know what today has in store for us. There are a hundred and one things I SHOULD do and wouldn't mind doing, but all those could loose out to the great nothing. However, nothing is what I did yesterday and two days of nothing is something I dont normally do, it can drive me nuts. So what might happen today? Laundry might happen, cleaning the apartment might happen, doing some learning might happen and some dinner cooking might happen.

I will make another post tonight and recount the days adventures. Who knows what will happen? Bum bum bummmmm!!!!! (dramatic music exit)
